What is this product used for?

S-adenosyl-L-methionine is also known as SAMe. It may help with low mood and some forms of arthritis. SAMe may be used to help with itching in people with liver problems.

What are the precautions when taking this product?

  • Always check with your doctor before you use a natural product. Some products may not mix well with drugs or other natural products.

  • Be sure to tell your doctor that you take this product if you are scheduled for surgery or tests.

  • Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breastfeeding. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks of using this natural product.

  • Do not take if you have bipolar depression.

  • Do not take this product if you are taking the drug daptomycin or methylene blue. Side effects of this product may be increased.

  • Take extra care if you are taking drugs that effect serotonin, such as some cough medicines, SSRIs, or MAO inhibitors. These are products like St John’s wort, dextromethorphan, fluoxetine, citalopram, isocarboxazid, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine.

  • Take extra care if you are taking levodopa drugs for Parkinson disease.

  • Take extra care and check with your doctor if you have:

    • Mental problems like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia

    • ADHD

    • Low mood

    • Parkinson disease
