What is Caplyta?

Caplyta capsules contain lumateperone, an antipsychotic medicine.

Caplyta is a once-daily capsule used to control the symptoms of schizophrenia in adults.

Although the physical cause of schizophrenia is unknown, it is believed that imbalances between chemicals, such as dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate, in the brain is the probable cause. The exact way Caplyta works is unknown but it is thought to affect the balance of these brain-signaling chemicals to help control schizophrenia symptoms.

Caplyta is also used with the medicine lithium or valproate to treat depressive episodes that happen with bipolar I or bipolar II disorder (bipolar depression).

Caplyta is not approved for use in older adults with dementia-related psychosis. Caplyta can increase the risk of death in elderly people who have lost touch with reality (psychosis) due to confusion and memory loss (dementia).
